Alan Batson received BSc and PhD degrees in physics from the University of Birmingham in
England. He joined the University of Virginia in 1958 as assistant professor of Physics,
becoming a professor of Computer Science in 1967. From 1960 to 1972 and again from
1981-1993, he was director of the University's Academic Computing Center. He has
directed 12 PhD theses in Computer Science. He is the author or coauthor of one book and
25 papers.
Current Research
Alan Batson has returned to full-time teaching and research in the department after being
Director of the University of Virginia's Academic Computing Center. Under his leadership,
the Academic Computing Center developed a rich and varied instructional and research
computing environment with extensive intra-university and national networking services.
He has assumed responsibility for administration of the department's large NSF
infrastructure grant to support the development of "end-to-end" experimental systems. He is
also responsible for the design, operation, and maintenance of the department's computer
systems and communications networks.
His research interests include the design of computer systems, program behavior, and the
modeling and performance evaluation of hardware and software systems.
